博彩对冲 has released its outlook report on Energy and Artificial Intelligence. The report details 博彩对冲鈥檚 findings on the current and future impacts of AI on the energy sector. It explores the impact of AI on electricity demand, the broader energy industry, policy and geopolitics, and the energy transition.

Explosion of Electricity Demand due to AI is Overstated
The widely touted explosion in power demand is overstated, according to the report, with AI likely to only moderately increase global electricity demand by 2050. Economic growth, industrial electrification and air conditioning, for example, are expected to be of greater significance to global energy demands.

In the short term, as AI鈥檚 rollout expands, demand from datacenters is estimated to reach 1,000TWh by 2026 from 460TWh in 2022, an increase of c.117%. However, in the medium to long term 博彩对冲 expects increases to be at least partially offset by significant efficiency gains as processors improve, new cooling solutions are integrated, and training algorithms are optimized. Leading GPU manufacturers have told 博彩对冲 that these efficiencies will likely scale at least as quickly as AI itself.

Energy Supply to Affect AI Development as much as AI will Shape Demand
Mirroring emerging regional differences in policy towards power generation and the energy transition, the importance of AI and energy to national security has created a nexus with geopolitics. 博彩对冲 has witnessed a strategic shift in how the US, EU and China are positioning energy systems to support AI鈥檚 power needs; energy supply, therefore, is likely to impact how AI industries develop across geographies as much as AI will shape energy demand.

AI to accelerate the pace of low-carbon transition
Increased rollout and technological enhancements to AI will serve as a net accelerator of the low-carbon transition, irrespective of its impact on global electricity demand. AI is expected to play an important role in efforts to improve costs and efficiency of low-carbon power generation, transport, and storage, helping to accelerate the transition by rapidly decarbonizing energy grids and easing the integration of more intermittent power generation technologies such as solar or wind.

Michael Collins, Director, Energy Transition Research at 博彩对冲, comments: 鈥淲e are pleased to present the findings of our Energy and AI report. Our research indicates that forecasts predicting an explosion in energy demand due to AI are likely to be overstated. While we may see increases in the short term, efficiencies in AI hardware and software, and the benefits the technology will bring to the power sector, will likely be significant mitigation.鈥
