Low Carbon Investment Data
  • ʶԳ’s Low-Carbon Investment Tracker provides valuable data-driven insights into where leading energy firms are directing their expanding transition spending.

  • The tracker covers investments in five key categories: Low-Carbon Power Generation, Electricity Solutions, Hydrogen and Low-Carbon Fuels and Gases, EVs and Mobility, and CCS and Carbon Removal (see below).

  • It does not track low-carbon oil-field expenditure (like efficiency improvements or flaring reduction) or investments in petrochemicals or natural gas.

  • The data covers low-carbon investment announcements since 2015 by 48 top oil and gas firms.

  • Projects are tracked based on the date initially announced but with updates as projects reach final investment decision (FID). Historical data may therefore evolve.

  • The tracker uses reported investment values where available, with estimates made for other cases.

Notes: Investment Assumptions

Investment values are – wherever possible – ascribed to assets and investment items in the tracker. These values can be reported directly by the company or by a reliable news outlet, or otherwise estimated or calculated by ʶԳ.

  • Values are always presented on a net basis (for the company concerned) and can cover the company’s share of total expected capital expenditure, acquisition costs, or other equivalent investment. Operating or other costs are typically not included.

  • The dataset shows investment values at the time of project announcement or approval, rather than projected expenditure spread over multiple years. Multistage or phased investments can be shown split as multiple assets (rather than as a single item).

For assets/investment items where the investment value is not reported but can be estimated, investment value is based on (1) project type (such as solar photovoltaic, onshore wind or carbon capture and storage (CCS), (2) project region, (3) project capacity/size, and (4) project date, with further adjustments as needed for other factors.

  • Renewable energy capex cost calculations are based on ʶԳ’s proprietary Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) dataset, with capex assumptions updated annually.

  • Estimates of the costs of emerging technologies like CCS and hydrogen are informed by ongoing ʶԳ analysis and modeling work, taking into account project technology, location, and scale. Given the lower maturity and higher uncertainty around these technologies, valuation approaches and estimates are continually revised and improved.
METHODOLOGY NOTES
CategoryNotes
Companies & Peer GroupsCompanies are gathered into seven peer groups: European Majors, US Majors, NOCs, Independent E&Ps, Industrial Gas, Midstream, and Independent Refiners.
Investment TypeInvestments are grouped into one of six main categories: Acquisition, Capex Investment, Joint Venture, MOU, R&D and VC Investment. While not always mutually exclusive, these categories help to highlight different strategic approaches to low-carbon investments.
Project CategoriesInvestment activity is grouped into one of five main categories: Low-Carbon Power Generation, Electricity Solutions, EVs & Mobility, Hydrogen and Low-Carbon Fuels/Gases, and CCS & Carbon Removal. Items are then sorted into more detailed sub-categories.
StatusThe three main categories are: “Proposed” for newly announced, early stage and pre-FID investments; “Under Development” for investments that are underway, under construction or post-FID, and “Completed” for onstream projects, closed acquisitions or similarly completed investments. A small but growing number of assets/projects are classified as “Uncertain” or “Divested,” while a final category of “Cancelled” items are removed from the tracker.
Date AnnouncedWe track projects based on the initial date announced, or the estimated date announced if there was no public announcement. We also make updates as projects reach FID, so historical data may therefore evolve.
Investment ValueValues for each investment item are the company’s net share of total completed project cost before the impact of project finance is considered. Information on the investment source is also provided.
ReferencesLinks to relevant ʶԳ news and analysis coverage and announcements or reports by the company (or partner) involved are also provided.
