BP's decision last week to sell off its Carson, California, refinery and Arco marketing assets in the Southwest US to Tesoro moves the UK firm both closer to its asset disposal goals and further away from its supermajor past (EIF Aug.15'12). But when viewed through a more specific lens, the properties, when combined with aggressive attempts to sell its Texas City refinery and billions of dollars in producing deepwater Gulf of Mexico fields, show BP unspooling a fair amount of the remaining assets purchased during the Amoco and Arco takeovers of the late 1990s -- the assets upon which John Browne's era was based.
