Earlier this month, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) received a construction license from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) to start construction on the first of four BWRX-300 small modular reactors (SMRs) at its Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP). This 300 megawatt unit will be the first-of-a-kind deployment of the GE-Hitachi BWRX-300-designed SMR and is the most advanced commercial SMR project outside of China or Russia. OPG, which is owned by the Canadian province of Ontario, is already working with other developers to advance BWRX-300 projects, from Saskatchewan to Poland to the US to the UK. The company is also looking toward its Wesleyville site, also in Ontario, where it could deploy up to 10 gigawatts of new nuclear — likely large reactors. ʶԳ's Phil Chaffee discussed OPG's new nuclear plans with Sandra Dykxhoorn, OPG's vice president for new nuclear development, on the sidelines of last week's annual conference of the Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA). A shortened and edited version of their Apr. 17 conversation is below.
