State-owned Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) signed a $1.5 billion engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with Megha Engineering & Infrastructure to build two 700 megawatt nuclear reactors indigenous pressurized heavy water reactors (IPHWRs) at the Kaiga nuclear power plant in Karnataka. “This is the biggest-ever order placed by NPCIL and marks Miel’s first major step into the nuclear energy sector — a field that will help shape India’s energy future,” Megha said in a statement. Kaiga-5 and -6 are two of 10 planned “fleet mode” IPHWR newbuilds. Pre-construction work at Kaiga is already under way, with L&T Heavy Engineering reporting in July 2024 that it delivered the second steam generator to Kaiga. Meanwhile, as New Delhi evaluates a change to its nuclear liability laws that could help usher in foreign nuclear power suppliers and developers, the government is also weighing a proposal to enable foreign companies to own up to 49% in its nuclear power plants, government sources told Reuters this week.
