Save for later Print Download Share The IEA's Global Methane Tracker 2025 report, released on Wednesday, delivers a blunt message: Despite rising awareness, global methane emissions from fossil fuels remain stubbornly high, even as cost-effective solutions exist to curb them. In 2024, the energy sector released around 145 million tons of methane, about one-third of all emissions from human activity, according to the IEA. Oil and gas operations alone accounted for over half of the total. What's more, IEA estimates of emissions from abandoned oil and gas wells and coal mines, newly tracked in this year’s report, contributed an additional 8 million tons, making these sources larger emitters than many major producing countries.
