European jet fuel markets entered the new year in a tight spot due to persistently low imports from foreign suppliers. Incoming shipments fell 20% below year-earlier volumes in December and were 12% lower in January. With downstream utilization rates at 83% of capacity, European refiners churned out 3.2 million tons of jet fuel. Airline liftings were 5% higher than year-earlier levels at 4.8 million tons. Regional stocks in January totaled 9.5 million tons, with a surplus in the UK keeping European tanks some 4% above the year-earlier mark.
