This ranking of the world's top green power generators from both industrialized and emerging markets, published in EI New Energy, is based on companies鈥� renewable energy portfolios and greenhouse gas emissions. This year's top ranked company, Acciona, is an independent power producer with 100% renewable energy capacity and is a newcomer to the rankings. Acciona holds a distinctive position -- its origins are in construction and engineering, not conventional energy, and it sees renewables as a strong, stable financial bet.

Other key highlights include:

• Renewable energy technologies accounted for almost 80% of new capacity added in 2014 by companies in the ranking
  
• Europe continues to play a leading role in green power, with six European companies in this year鈥檚 top 10 (Acciona, Iberdrola, EDP, Enel, EDF and Dong Energy)
  

Six Chinese firms are among the 10 biggest owners of renewable capacity (China Guodian, China Huaneng, China Datang, CPI, CGN and China Huadian)

• Seven new additions to the rankings include Acciona, China Three Gorges, Axpo, China National Nuclear Corp., Wec Energy, Dewa and Talen Energy
  
• The US picture is diverse, with NextEra Energy, the biggest wind owner in the country, at fourth place; Exelon and Berkshire Hathaway Energy also made the top 20
  

鈥淒espite uncertainty surrounding carbon pricing, power generators around the globe are adding substantial renewable electricity capacity into their portfolios,鈥� said Lauren Craft, editor of EI New Energy.

Most companies at the bottom of the ranking are located in coal- or oil-producing countries. They include the US' Ameren and AEP, Turkey's EUAS, Indonesia's PLN, India's NTPC, Poland's PGE and South Africa's Eskom, as well as Iran's Tavanir, Qatar's Kahramaa, Russia's Mosenergo, Algeria's Sonelgaz and Saudi Arabia鈥檚 Saudi Electricity Co.

, a specialist publication covering trends in carbon, renewable energy and transportation, selected 100 of the largest power generators from around the world, accounting for just over half of global capacity. The ranking evaluated their 鈥済reenness鈥� according to carbon dioxide emissions per megawatt hour, volume of renewable energy capacity and proportion of renewables to total capacity. Rather than approach the subject by country or region, the report compares utilities around the world, from both industrialized and emerging markets. An accompanying analysis draws out key trends and conclusions.
