Published in EI New Energy, the global ranking is based on renewable energy portfolio and greenhouse gas emissions. This year renewable technologies accounted for a staggering 80% of new generation added by large utilities in 2013, compared with 30% in 2012.Other key highlights include:Chinese companies dominated the non-hydro renewable electric capacity added across the globe last year. Of 21 GW of non-hydro capacity added,13 GW or 60% was built by Chinese companies 鈥� far more than in the US, Europe and the rest of the worldDespite policy uncertainties in their key Spanish and US markets, Spain鈥檚 Iberdrola and Portugal鈥檚 EDP continue to lead the ranking as they have added renewable capacity in new regions, such as Latin AmericaThe US鈥� NRG Energy, now ranked 48, gained an impressive 34 places in this year鈥檚 ranking following the acquisition of key renewable assets. The most well-ranked US companies are Florida-based NextEra Energy (4) and Iowa - based Berkshire Hathaway Energy (10)Lauren Craft, Editor of EI New Energy said:"While climate change remains a thorny political issue due to geographical differences and economic concerns, many utilities are getting ahead of the curve by recognizing renewables as a long-term business opportunity. From here, it will be important to watch international climate talks and carbon pricing mechanisms gaining traction around the globe, which could provide further impetus for renewable capacity additions.鈥�New additions in this year鈥檚 ranking include Australia's AGL (ranked 49), Qatar's Kahramaa (61), Saudi Arabia's Acwa Power (75) and the US' Alliant Energy (79).Companies in big coal-producing countries continue to perform poorly, such as Indonesia's PLN (94), India's NTPC (97), Poland's PGE (98) or South Africa's Eskom (99). China and the US are the biggest coal-producing countries and they鈥檙e doing reasonably well as countries in the ranking.EI New Energy, a specialist publication covering trends in carbon, renewable energy, and transportation, selected 100 of the largest power generators from around the world, accounting for just over half of global capacity. The ranking evaluated their 鈥済reenness鈥� according to carbon dioxide emissions per megawatt hour, volume of renewable energy capacity and proportion of renewables to total capacity. Rather than approach the subject by country or region, the report compares utilities around the world, from both industrialized and emerging markets.
