COP28 Heading to Crunch Time

COP28 is at the halfway point, with the easy ground covered and the talks now move onto tough substantive details on issues like a fossil fuel phaseout. Wednesday marked the end of the first week of the summit in Dubai, with the conclusion of the technical phase of the formal negotiations. After a day of rest for the UN climate talks on Thursday, ministers from over 190 countries are due to start work Friday on finalizing the key negotiating texts — including key language to be debated around phasing out fossil fuels and tripling renewable capacity. Here we look at some areas where progress has been made so far at the talks — especially financing breakthroughs and new commitments from the oil and gas industry — and also where the hard yards still need to be covered.
