While many European oil companies are still aiming, publicly at least, to reach net zero by 2050, few have presented convincing road maps on how they will reduce their Scope 3 (end-use) emissions to achieve that target, especially as global oil and gas demand continues to rise. Oil companies like to view Scope 3 — by far the biggest contributor to their overall emissions footprint — as somebody else’s Scope 1 and 2 (operational) emissions and, by extension, somebody else’s problem. Yet, there are important nuances from company to company.
