COP28 marks a milestone for multiple low-carbon technologies named as areas for “acceleration” in the final deal — a big-tent approach that leaves room for a range of solutions. The 199 parties agreed in Dubai to tripling renewables and doubling energy efficiency by 2030 along with the acceleration of clean hydrogen, nuclear, carbon removal, and low-emissions vehicles. The language doesn’t represent clear steering on those areas, with many caveats and future debates likely to ensue about what qualifies. But the overall signal is significant and represents general consensus that the toolkit needs to stay diverse as the global economy decarbonizes. Nature-based solutions were also recognized, particularly in forestry, but similar language was already included in previous COP deals.
