European lobby group Transport & Environment (T&E) is calling for Europe’s carbon market to be extended to include departing international flights when Brussels reviews its cornerstone emissions trading system (ETS) next year. “Aviation emissions are spiraling out of control,” said T&E Aviation Policy Manager Krisztina Hencz at the Apr. 28 release of the group's annual carbon stock take. “The sector continues to dodge the true cost of its pollution, making a mockery of airlines’ pledges to build back greener after Covid. Next year’s review of EU carbon markets is a chance to rectify a loophole in the current legislation and ensure airlines pay for the true cost of their pollution,” she argued.
