An escalating US-China trade war is threatening to decouple trade between the world’s two largest economies — with potentially disastrous consequences for global economic growth and energy demand. The US ratcheted up tariffs on Chinese imports to 145% this week but paused so-called reciprocal tariffs on most countries for at least 90 days. China has retaliated with its own levies on US goods of 125% on top of a growing list of export restrictions on critical minerals and other measures.
