Huge growth in Mideast oil refining since the pandemic is reshaping global trade in refined products, including jet fuel, with the trend set to continue even through the energy transition. Rystad Energy Senior Vice President & Global Head, Commodities Markets Mukesh Sahdev flagged a near-40% surge in Mideast product exports in the five years since Covid-19. Mideast refining capacity has grown by almost a third in that time: Al-Zour in Kuwait and Duqm in Oman both started production, alongside a supersized Ruwais in the United Arab Emirates. Sahdev, who previously worked for Shell, Aspen Technology and Indian Oil, was speaking on a GX-hosted webinar about the changing dynamic for Mideast product markets earlier this month.
