Oil company efforts to reconcile decarbonization goals with financial discipline continue to sideline projects for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). BP’s plan to build a SAF plant using the Hefa process at its Castellon refinery in Valencia, Spain, is the latest casualty. Citing widespread uncertainties in the market for low-carbon fuels, the UK major is scrapping plans to triple biofuels output with the addition of a new facility. BP produces limited volumes of SAF at Castellon by coprocessing biogenic material with crude oil. International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) list of global producers puts the volume at 1.2 million liters (325,000 gallons) per year.
