As Mideast Gulf oil and gas producers race to meet highly ambitious — sometimes deemed unrealistic — transition targets in a bid to diversify their revenue and maintain key roles as energy suppliers, Qatar has taken a somewhat different approach. The gas-rich country has set what it sees as more realistic and achievable targets, with a strong focus on decarbonization of emissions rather than building out large renewable energy capacity — although renewable growth is one aspect of its plans. Unlike its Gulf neighbors such as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, Qatar has not announced national net-zero targets.
