Diplomatic efforts to address climate change are at a critical juncture. Most countries have now missed a deadline to submit updated climate pledges, known as nationally determined contributions (NDCs) — which bodes poorly for the run-up to COP30 later this year in Brazil. Yet, parties to the Paris Agreement still have a few months to play catch-up and submit late plans, with most negotiators focused on discussing the specifics of the energy transition rather than any changes or slowdown in the pace, experts note.
