  • The US and Iran have returned to high-level diplomacy over Tehran’s nuclear program, but the timeline for reaching a deal is short, and the consequences of failure could hardly be more serious.

  • Both sides may look to a “mini deal” that would build confidence and bridge differences until a more comprehensive agreement can be reached, but much will depend on US policy.

  • If a compromise can’t be reached by June, European powers to the 2015 nuclear deal are likely to start the process to reinstate, or “snap back”, UN sanctions.
