NTPC's solicitation of interest last week for large pressurized water reactor (PWR) vendors willing to help deploy some 15 gigawatts of new nuclear while transferring their technology was one of the boldest moves in the global newbuild space in a generation. Should it find a vendor willing to accept that bargain, India's largest power generator might permanently reorder the global nuclear market, but for the moment, the initiative is little more than a fishing expedition, with NTPC still hoping to reel in a large reactor design cost competitive with other baseload power sources.
