Vietnam will commission up to 6.4 gigawatts of nuclear capacity by 2035 and a further 8 GW by 2050 under the adjusted long-term energy plan approved by the government last week. Hanoi's decision last year to revive its civil nuclear ambitions has only accelerated this year: Now it hopes to see two large nuclear projects — Ninh Thuan 1, delivered by Electricity Vietnam, and Ninh Thuan 2, delivered by PetroVietnam — commissioned between 2030 and 2035, producing 4.0-6.4 GW of nuclear capacity. These targets are part of a broader plan to boost Vietnam's power generation from almost all sources, with $118.2 billion to be spent on new capacity from 2026-30, and a further $114.1 billion from 2031-35. The adjusted eighth national energy plan notes that progress on the nuclear deployments through 2035 "can be accelerated if conditions are favorable."
